Analysis

Natural Light:

Spaces within the fire station that have access to natural light are the gear wash room, work room, multipurpose room, the office spaces, conference room, the lounge, recreation room, training room, ready room, radio room, and the apparatus bay. The kitchen, bathroom, and certain office spaces that don’t have natural light access.

Spaces that should be required to have access to natural light are the apparatus bay, radio room, and the major office spaces like the chef’s office.

ADA:

ADA accessible features that are present in the fire station are elevators, door widths, ADA parking spaces with van accessible access, handicap ramps. The ADA parking is directly near one of the main entrances of the station.

The bathrooms are ADA compliance with a 30’ radius turning space within the bathroom, handicap access shall, rebars.

Construction Type:

The construction type seems to be more type II construction.

It has concrete and steel columns all over the first floor, along with an open steel column ceiling.

The exterior is built out of bricks going up to the roof line.

General Sizing of Fire Apparatus

An average size for a large fire truck is around 8 feet wide, 11 feet tall, and about 35 feet long (according to google).

The apparatus for our fire department has 5 lanes. The doors are 14 feet wide and 14 feet tall. Each lane 77 feet long, which can fit two of these large fire trucks

The lanes run straight through the buildings (no turns).

The exit for the trucks pull out onto a short 45 foot driveway

The path to re-enter the apparatus with a service vehicle goes around the back from the side of the building with a 15 foot driveway for the service vehicles only.

The turning radius for the truck starts from the 15 foot road to a 30 foot road wit a 20 foot turning radius

Special training features

Our firehouse has a training room on the second floor. The room is about 30 feet long by 20 feet wide.

The firehouse also has a fitness center in the basement. The room is about 25 feet wide by 63 feet long.

The specs don't give any specific details as to what is in these rooms but we can assume that the fitness center may be more like a gym with treadmills and weights.

Hazardous material decontamination sites for gross decontamination

Coming off the apparatus, there is a shower room meant for decontamination so that no decontaminants are being dragged throughout the building. The bunker gear area is also right off the apparatus this way no one is lugging their gear around the entire area.
